still lifes

Rubin was always fond of the genre of Still Life painting, most particularly colorful bouquets of flowers and fruits. In his early Eretz-Yisrael paintings these still lives reflect a newly attained sense of rootedness. It started with a single, lonely flower in a glass or in a pot and it evolved to rich bouquets of local wild flowers, plates abundant with pomegranates and goldfish bowls – a visual expression of the French joie de vivre and in Rubin's case – the attachment to the land and the sense of home.
