Roumania

Rubin's early paintings painted in Roumania following W.W.1 were rarely exposed during his lifetime, but many have surfaced since and they shed light on his artistic development and a wider cultural and historical context. These early works help the viewer to reveal the influences on Rubin's art during his studies in Paris and his journeys in Europe: early Byzantine art (which he saw in churches in Roumania of his childhood), Italian Renaissance art, early 20th century symbolism and the art of Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler.
